Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are moving back to the UK with their two children after six years in California, according to Variety.
The transition will begin in the coming weeks and last for what is described as "an extended period," Variety reported on 19 August 2026. The family will keep their Montecito home in California during the move. Where they will live in the UK is not yet known.
The news pulls together months of signals. In late June, People reported that Meghan and the children — Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, five — were expected to travel to the UK for the first time, with a possible stay at Althorp, the childhood home of Harry's late mother, Princess Diana. By early July, People confirmed that Meghan, Archie and Lilibet would make the trip, their first visit to Britain since 2022. Harry had arrived solo in the UK on 6 July after the family vacationed in Europe.
Behind the return, a thaw with the King. People reported on 27 July that King Charles would offer Harry a room at Buckingham Palace during his September visit. Two days before the Variety story broke, People reported that Harry planned to return to the UK "more and more" following a reunion with his father.
The wider framing has been building for weeks. The Daily Beast reported on 19 July that the Sussexes no longer see their long-term future in California, citing a showbiz expert who said King Charles is helping the couple "reverse Megxit" — the shorthand coined in 2020 for their departure from royal duties and Britain. Page Six similarly reported that Harry and Meghan were seeking to reverse that departure after their brief family trip to the UK in July.
For the Sussexes, the move reopens a chapter many assumed was closed. The couple stepped back as working royals in 2020 and settled in Montecito, where they signed production deals with Netflix and Spotify and launched their Archewell foundation. Keeping the California house signals the move is not a clean break — at least not yet.
For the children, it will be a reintroduction to a country they have barely known as a home. Archie was born in the UK in 2019 but left as an infant. Lilibet, born in California in 2021, has not lived in Britain at all.
