GCSE Results 2026: Grades Hold Above Pre-Pandemic Levels as Gender Gap Narrows

More than a million students across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland received their GCSE grades on 20 August 2026, with higher-grade outcomes reaching a record level outside the Covid years — when exams were replaced by teacher assessments. The proportion of 16-year-olds in England receiving grades 7, 8 and 9 (equivalent to A and A*) rose by 0.1 percentage point to 23.1%. At the grade 4 threshold (equivalent to C or higher), the pass rate climbed to 70.7%, up from 70.5% in 2025. The standout shift sits in GCSE maths. Some 22.3% of 16-year-olds in England received grades 7 or better, but the gender breakdown is where the movement is: 24% of boys hit that mark, compared with 20.5% of girls. At the grade 4 threshold, the proportion of girls awarded a pass in maths dropped from 71% to 70.7%, while boys improved to 72.8%. The narrowing gender gap is the more analytically interesting thread. Boys gaining ground in maths at both the grade 4 and grade 7-plus thresholds, while girls' pass rate in the subject dipped slightly, marks a meaningful shift in a long-standing pattern. In English, girls widened their lead. The aggregate effect is a compression of the overall performance differential between sexes to 2.9 percentage points below its 2019 level.
