HBO's Heated Rivalry has won Program of the Year at the 42nd Annual Television Critics Association Awards, the top prize handed out by an organisation of roughly 250 professional TV journalists across the United States and Canada (Variety). The awards, covering the 2025–2026 TV season, were announced on 20 August 2026 via press release and social media clips — skipping an in-person ceremony for another year.

The night's biggest haul belonged to Widow's Bay, which collected three wins: Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, Outstanding New Program, and Individual Achievement in Comedy for Kate O'Flynn (Variety). Heated Rivalry, Widow's Bay and Industry had entered the ceremony as the nomination leaders with five apiece, according to Deadline.

HBO's The Pitt won Outstanding Achievement in Drama, while Rhea Seehorn took Individual Achievement in Drama for Pluribus (Variety). Pluribus was among the second tier of nominees with four nominations, alongside Hacks and The Pitt (Deadline). Noah Wyle of The Pitt was also nominated in the individual achievement category, where Heated Rivalry leads had been considered potential challengers to his 2025 win (Awards Watch).

Netflix picked up three wins: Death by Lightning for Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries or Specials, Long Story Short for Outstanding Achievement in Animation, and Squid Game for Outstanding International Series. Apple TV led all platforms with five wins across the night, followed by Netflix with three and HBO with two (Variety).

Apple TV's tally included Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical for Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming. In the remaining categories, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Achievement in Variety, Talk or Sketch, The Traitors won Outstanding Achievement in Reality, PBS's The American Revolution took Outstanding Achievement in News and Information, and Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians won Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming (Variety).

Two special awards rounded out the list. Stephen Colbert received the TCA Career Achievement Award. The Heritage Award, given each year to a programme of lasting cultural significance, went to In Living Color (Variety).

What makes Heated Rivalry's Program of the Year win stand out is the show's unusual awards-eligibility position. The series originated as a purely Canadian production, which makes it ineligible for Emmy consideration in the United States. It has already won a Peabody and a TV Academy Honor (Variety) — a combination that places it in rare company for a show barred from television's most prominent American awards track.

The TCA represents about 250 journalists whose coverage reaches tens of millions of readers each week, and the organisation has honoured outstanding television and contributions to the medium's heritage through these annual awards for more than four decades (TVCritics.org).
