'A Breed Apart' Director Griff Furst Says He Was Asked to Join Hayden Panettiere Intervention Before Her Death

Director Griff Furst has revealed that Hayden Panettiere's team asked him to take part in an intervention for the actress after she finished filming his 2025 film A Breed Apart — before her death three days ago at the age of 36.

Furst said Panettiere's team reached out to him and he accepted the invitation, but the intervention never took place, at least as far as he was aware. He spoke about the experience in an interview published on 20 August 2026 by Variety.

Panettiere's family confirmed her death on 17 August 2026 in a statement issued through her publicist, according to Reuters. Police found her unresponsive at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina. They said there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

The investigation into her death is still open. The Drug Enforcement Administration has joined the probe, Variety reported. Greenville County Coroner's Office said in a press release that Panettiere was found in cardiac arrest, according to ABC News. People reported that dispatch audio from the emergency response mentioned "overdose" and "cardiac arrest."

An official cause of death has not yet been determined. It is expected following an autopsy.

Furst told Variety that Panettiere had spoken openly and publicly about her addiction in her memoir. The actress began her career at 11 months old, a span of work that carried her from child performer to adult lead.
