Virgin Music Group U.K. President Vanessa Bosåen Departs After Six Years

Vanessa Bosåen, president of Virgin Music Group U.K., is leaving the company after six years, Billboard reported on August 20. Her departure was first shared in an internal staff memo and later on her LinkedIn profile.
In her departure statement, Bosåen wrote: "After six unforgettable years" and "Six years later," signalling the end of a tenure that began when she joined the company in its earliest days. She initially served as managing director from October 2020, according to her LinkedIn profile, and was promoted to president in January 2023. Universal Music Group had relaunched Virgin Music as a label-services and distribution operation in February 2021, naming Bosåen — then Vanessa Higgins — to lead its U.K. arm (PR Newswire). Label services, in this context, means the company provides distribution, marketing and other infrastructure to artists and independent labels rather than owning their recordings outright.
Bosåen arrived at Virgin with deep roots on both sides of the business. She spent 15 years as a touring musician under the name Vanessa Knight before founding Regent Street Records, an independent label and publishing company (Billboard). She also sits on the board of the BPI, the trade body that represents the U.K. recorded-music industry and administers the BRIT Awards (Hits Daily Double). Billboard recognised her on its U.K. Power Players lists in both 2025 and 2026, and on its International Power Players list in 2023.
During her time leading the U.K. operation, VMG handled release campaigns for artists including Rema, Beabadoobee, Melanie C, Self Esteem, D-Block Europe and Underworld (Billboard). The roster spans Afrobeats, indie pop, electronic and hip-hop — a mix that reflects Virgin's position as a home for independent artists seeking major-label-scale distribution without signing away their master rights.
The departure follows a period of significant restructuring at VMG. Earlier in 2026, the company completed its acquisition of Downtown Music, a deal that consolidated its position in the independent-distribution market. In June, VMG announced its new global and regional leadership team, naming Nick Roden as president of Europe (Billboard). MusicWeek separately confirmed the six-year tenure and the departure (MusicWeek).
No successor for the U.K. president role has been named. Roden's appointment to the broader European presidency in June had already shifted the regional reporting structure, and Bosåen's exit leaves a question mark over who will lead the U.K. team directly. Her next move has not been announced.
