Crawley Finds Form as Kent Dominate Rain-Hit Opening Day Against Middlesex
Zak Crawley scored 81 to lead Kent to 299-6 on a rain-shortened opening day of their Rothesay County Championship Division Two match against Middlesex at Merchant Taylors' School Ground, Northwood. Crawley found an equally fluent partner in Sam Northeast, who made 87. The pair added 142 for the second wicket, a stand that took the game away from Middlesex after early rain had already eaten into the day's overs. Northeast fell short of what would have been a third century against Middlesex in as many years.
Crawley's innings came to an end when he was caught at slip off Ryan Higgins. The Middlesex all-rounder was returning after two months out with a wrist injury, making the breakthrough all the more timely for the hosts. Higgins' dismissal of Crawley gave Middlesex a foothold they had struggled to find through the afternoon.
Toby Roland-Jones was Middlesex's most successful bowler, taking 3-70, while Tom Helm chipped in with 2-57. Kent's middle order could not fully capitalise on the platform their top two had built. Ben Compton (13), Tawanda Muyeye (13), Daniel Bell-Drummond (8) and Chris Benjamin (27) all fell without settling in for a long stay.
For Crawley, the innings is a sign of timing rediscovered. Opening the batting in first-class cricket — the multi-day, two-innings format that is the traditional bedrock of the English domestic game — demands patience and concentration over flair, and a first fifty of the season, even in August, gives a batter something to build on. Kent will hope the runs keep flowing as the match progresses.
Middlesex, meanwhile, will take heart from Roland-Jones and Higgins finding rhythm on a day when the weather gave bowlers little margin for error. Six wickets for 299 on a shortened day is honest work against a top order that clicked.
