Patterson-White Resists Surrey Surge as Notts Crumble Then Climb at The Oval
Liam Patterson-White stood almost alone on day one at The Kia Oval, scoring 76 not out off 112 balls to drag Nottinghamshire from 41-5 to a final total of 184 against Surrey in the Rothesay County Championship.
Surrey captain Rory Burns won the toss and chose to bowl on a green-tinged surface, and the decision paid off almost immediately. Openers Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater were gone inside three overs — Hameed edging Matt Fisher for five, Slater falling to Dan Worrall for four. By the time Freddie McCann sliced a drive straight to backward point, Nottinghamshire had lost five wickets for 41 runs inside the opening session. Tom Lawes was the chief destroyer, returning figures of 5-45, while Worrall (2-41) and Fisher (2-43) shared the early damage.
What followed was a rescue act built on patience and a few well-timed boundaries. Patterson-White, a left-arm spinner by trade who has become one of Nottinghamshire's most reliable all-round performers, hit 13 fours in his unbeaten stay. He found partners in the lower order. Kyle Verreynne contributed 22, Brett Hutton 19, and Dillon Pennington 9, as the last two wickets added 80 runs between them — a meaningful recovery on a pitch that had invited every bowler to attack.
The innings had its chaotic moments. Jack Haynes cracked a square cut for six off Lawes before falling for 20, having already been dropped on nine by the same bowler. Joe Clarke edged to Dom Sibley at first slip after Ollie Pope had pouched two catches at second. Ben Martindale, making his first-class debut, reached 13 before edging behind off Jordan Clark.
Surrey's reply began unevenly. Olly Stone produced a second-ball wicket — Dom Sibley caught behind without scoring — to leave the hosts 13-1 at stumps. Surrey also lost Ryan Patel to a finger injury sustained while attempting a catch; he was substituted out of the team and replaced by Josh Blake.
For Patterson-White, the innings continues a 2026 season in which he has established himself as a genuine match-winner. He claimed nine wickets in Nottinghamshire's innings victory over Surrey at The Oval earlier this year, and returned career-best figures of 9-109 in a win over Essex in June. He signed a new three-year contract with Nottinghamshire in July, committing to the club until the end of 2029. That deal reflected a player who, since securing a regular first-XI spot in 2025, has contributed 28 wickets and 540 runs across a Championship-winning campaign.
The ECB flagged this fixture among ten matches to watch in the 2026 run-in, and the opening day showed why. Surrey's seamers had the conditions and the early control. Patterson-White had the stubbornness to make Nottinghamshire's total respectable. Three days remain, and the contest already has its defining subplot.
