Jonas Brothers Debut New Single 'Listen When Sad' at Madison Square Garden
The Jonas Brothers debuted a new song, "Listen When Sad," during their concert at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, giving the crowd the first live hear of a single that has no release date yet.
Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas performed the track in the latter half of the show, which opened the first of three nights at the venue as part of their Burning Up Tour: All Over Again. The band's official Instagram account posted a reel of the performance, and Billboard shared video of the debut the same night.
Nick Jonas told the audience the band tapped into an early-2000s sound for the new material, naming Switchfoot, Taking Back Sunday, and Dashboard Confessional as reference points — bands that sat at the intersection of pop-punk and alternative rock during the era when the Jonas Brothers themselves were first coming up.
To get there, the trio re-teamed with the producer behind their self-titled album, A Little Bit Longer, and Lines, Vines and Trying Times — the run of records that defined their original late-2000s peak. A Little Bit Longer reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the magazine's flagship album chart, and sold more than two million copies.
The tour name is a callback: the original Burnin' Up Tour ran in 2008, nearly two decades before this revisit. The Burning Up Tour: All Over Again continues at Madison Square Garden and then heads to U.S. cities in the fall, with the next leg kicking off in Boston on Sept. 25, according to Rolling Stone.
No studio version of "Listen When Sad" has been announced. Fans at the show heard it first; everyone else is waiting on a date.
For a band that has moved through pop, country-adjacent solo work, and reunited-era material since their 2019 comeback album Happiness Begins, the early-2000s reference points pull the sound back toward the guitar-driven records that made their name. Whether that direction carries into a full project is not yet confirmed.
