Victony's sophomore album Starlife — a 15-track project released on 21 August — almost didn't exist at this size. The Nigerian artist began working on the material in February as a planned four-song EP, before it expanded first into a mixtape and ultimately a full album, according to Billboard (Billboard, 21 August 2026).

The turning point was a single track. A song called "FRE$H" sparked the creative surge that pushed the project past its original EP scope, Victony told Billboard. The album was officially announced two weeks ahead of release on his Instagram account, where he told followers it would arrive the following Friday (Instagram, 7 August 2026).

Starlife follows Victony's 2024 debut album Stubborn. Before that record, his breakthrough came in 2022 with "Soweto" — one of his earliest attempts at Afrobeats after starting out as a rapper. The original version, produced with Tempoe, peaked at No. 5 on the U.K.'s Official Afrobeats Chart. A remix featuring Rema reached No. 1 on that same chart the following year. An expanded edition adding Don Toliver to the Tempoe version went further still: it peaked at No. 65 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart — the broad all-genone singles ranking — and spent nine weeks in its top 100.

The scale of "Soweto" encouraged Victony to keep experimenting. On the Starlife track "Clear", he pushes beyond the smooth, airy vocals and R&B texture that listeners associate with him, delivering what he described as an upbeat, aggressive record. He called the song a challenge and one of the risks he took across the album.

That willingness to stretch is the thread connecting Starlife back to its origins. The album grew because a single song cracked the project open — and Victony, having watched "Soweto" exceed every chart he initially aimed for, decided to keep going rather than hold to a smaller plan.
