Anthony Hopkins Releases Debut Classical Album 'Life Is a Dream' on Decca
Sir Anthony Hopkins, the two-time Academy Award-winning actor, has released his debut album of original classical compositions. 'Life Is a Dream' arrived on Friday, 21 August 2026 on the Decca label, featuring 12 pieces recorded in London with Gustavo Dudamel conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra Billboard.
At the time of recording, Dudamel was the outgoing conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, adding a transatlantic thread to a project rooted in Wales Billboard. The album was first announced in July, with Decca Classics confirming the signing and the track 'Bracken Road' released as the lead single uDiscover Music. Hopkins, 88 at the time of the album's release, described signing with Decca as "the honour of a lifetime" Threads.
Hopkins described the pieces on the album as a musical companion to his 2025 autobiography, 'We Did OK, Kid' Billboard. The connections to his life are literal, not metaphorical. One piece, 'Margam', takes its name from the part of Wales where he grew up. Another, 'Farewell My Love', is dedicated to his wife of 23 years, Stella. The album also includes a piece titled 'Fanfare and March'.
The roots of the project reach back eight decades. Hopkins started playing piano at age seven, just after the Second World War ended, on a wooden-frame upright his mother bought for £4 and 10 pence Billboard. He became captivated by the Spanish concert pianist José Iturbi, who played himself in the 1945 film 'Anchors Away' and the 1948 film 'Three Daring Daughters'. In 1950, when Iturbi visited South Wales, the 12-year-old Hopkins secured his autograph — an encounter with a performing musician that stayed with him.
Hopkins has also cited the French composer Delibes as an influence, particularly the 'Flower Duet' from the 1883 opera 'Lakmé' Billboard. His father, a baker, struggled through the difficult post-war years in Europe, and Hopkins watched that strain at close range. Those years surface across the album's twelve tracks — not as programme notes, but as the material the music is made from.
For buyers, the Decca online store lists the vinyl LP at £35.99 and a CD edition at £11.99 Decca Shop. Hopkins announced the release date to his 7 million Instagram followers, confirming the 21 August arrival Instagram.
What makes 'Life Is a Dream' stand out is the timeline. An actor who has spent decades in front of cameras — and who started piano at seven on a £4 upright — has waited until 88 to release his first album of compositions, recorded with one of the world's most sought-after conductors.
