Summerhall Dominates Second Round of Scotsman Fringe First Awards 2026
Five shows have won the second round of The Scotsman's Fringe First awards at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with the venue Summerhall taking three of them.
The Scotsman — which has run the Fringe Firsts since 1973, making them the longest-running awards at the Edinburgh festivals — announced the week-two winners on 21 August 2026. Fringe Firsts go to shows making their world premieres at the Fringe, and are presented weekly throughout the festival.
The five second-round winners are Amnesia (Pleasance Courtyard), Ham (Summerhall), The Distance (Summerhall), Parasocial Activity (Gilded Balloon), and Salty Brine: How Strange It Is (The Neutral Milk Hotel Show) (Summerhall). What's On Stage and The Scotsman both published the announcement.
Summerhall's three wins in this round add to the two it collected in week one, when Toast was among the first-round winners alongside The Bridge (Assembly), The Singer (Traverse Theatre), Mayflies (Brown's of Leith), and Supposing (Traverse Theatre). That gives Summerhall five of the 11 Fringe First-winning shows announced so far in 2026 — nearly half the total.
For a venue that operates across a former veterinary school in Edinburgh's Marchmont, that concentration is striking. Summerhall is one of the Fringe's largest and most varied sites, hosting theatre, music, visual art and performance across dozens of rooms. It has built a reputation for programming new, experimental work that travels well beyond Edinburgh.
One of this round's winners is already heading south. Ham, by Hotter Project, is due to transfer to London later in 2026 — a transfer meaning the production moves from its Edinburgh venue into a London run. Among the other winners, Parasocial Activity at Gilded Balloon is a play by Briony Martha, according to The Scotsman.
The second round also brought first-time 2026 wins for two venues. Pleasance Courtyard, one of the Fringe's busiest hub venues, picked up its first Fringe First of the year with Amnesia. Gilded Balloon, another long-standing Fringe institution, joined the list with Parasocial Activity.
A third and final round of Fringe First winners was scheduled for the following week. The Scotsman maintains a running list of all 2026 winners on its website, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe's official site at edfringe.com also publishes the results.
The Fringe Firsts are judged by The Scotsman's critics and have recognised outstanding new writing premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for over 50 years. They remain one of the most closely watched signals of which new shows might have a life after August — whether through London transfers, touring, or wider attention from producers and programmers.
