UK Met Office Forecasts the Most Intense El Niño in Over a Century

On 21 August 2026, the UK Met Office predicted that the El Niño event now developing in the Pacific will be the most intense in more than a century, with sea surface temperatures forecast to rise by an unprecedented 3°C (5.4°F) above the long-term average. Aggregate forecasts put the event on course to peak at a 3.9°C anomaly in November, well above the 3°C threshold already detected in observations eNCA.
Adam Scaife, head of the Met Office's long-range forecasting, was unambiguous. "We should be clear that this is an unprecedented event," he said. "I have never seen an El Niño signal this intense in our forecasts." What El Niño Is — and Why This One Stands Apart
El Niño is declared when sea surface temperatures in a key region of the equatorial Pacific reach 0.5°C or more above the long-term average. In a typical El Niño, those temperatures rise by 1–2°C (1.8–3.6°F). Think of it as the Pacific Ocean running a fever: most years the fever is mild, but the ocean's temperature is climbing far beyond what forecasters usually see. The forecast lands against an already extreme backdrop: in mid-August 2026, the UK recorded its hottest day of the year, with west London reaching 38.1°C (100.5°F).
A Dual Driver of Global Warming
The Met Office also warned that the 2026 El Niño, combined with human-caused (anthropogenic) warming, is "very likely" to make 2027 the hottest year on record globally. That dual-driver framing matters. El Niño transfers heat from the ocean to the atmosphere — think of it as the ocean releasing stored warmth into the air above. Because greenhouse gases have already raised the planet's baseline temperature, this El Niño's effects will play out on a higher thermal floor than any previous event.
How the Numbers Compare
The numbers warrant scrutiny. A 3.9°C peak anomaly in November, if realised, would not merely exceed the strong 2015–16 El Niño (which peaked near 2.6°C in the Niño 3.4 region) but would approach doubling it. The 3°C figure the Met Office has already detected suggests the event is not a forecast risk but a present observation, with the only open question being how much further the anomaly climbs before peaking.
What This Means for Planning
The divergence between regional outcomes is the operational challenge. Drought in South America and the West Pacific hits agricultural yields, water security, and fire risk. Stormier conditions in northwestern Europe affect infrastructure, energy demand patterns, and flood risk. The global temperature record forecast for 2027 would carry political weight in an international climate-policy context where temperature milestones already shape negotiation dynamics.
