Insidious: Out of the Further — A Soft Reboot Brings Fresh Scares to a Six-Film Franchise

Sony Pictures Entertainment opens Insidious: Out of the Further in theatres on 21 August 2026, the sixth film in a horror franchise that began in 2010 — and the first designed as a soft reboot, aiming to welcome new viewers without demanding a backlog of five previous films (Variety).

Writer-director Jacob Chase told Variety he approached the project as "an original film with 'Insidious' in the title," treating it as a fresh start rather than a continuation. The story is credited to David Leslie, with the screenplay by Chase (Sony Pictures). Lin Shaye reprises her role as Elise Rainier, the paranormal investigator who has been the through-line of the series since the original (Sony Pictures).

The new lead is Gemma, played by Amelia Eve — a woman who discovers she can astral project, and whose gift brings demons back from The Further, the ghostly dimension at the heart of the franchise's mythology. Laura Gordon plays Gemma's mother and Island Austin plays her daughter, grounding the supernatural plot in three generations of one family (Variety).

Chase's path to a studio horror franchise runs through an unusual apprenticeship. His previous feature was Come Play (2020), a horror film about a boy stalked by a creature that emerges from his tablet. Before that, from 2012 to 2014, he built and operated Bigworm Sherwood Scare, a haunted attraction in Northridge, California, donating every dollar of proceeds to cystic fibrosis research and aid (Variety). The jump from a charitable haunted house to a Sony release is a distance most genre directors do not cover.

On the craft side, Chase said he insisted that every jump scare in the film carry genuine stakes and alter the story rather than simply startle the audience. The first scare, for instance, is the moment Gemma discovers her ability to astral project — the fright and the plot turn are the same beat (Variety).

For a franchise now spanning six entries over sixteen years, a soft reboot is the studio's bet that the name still sells tickets but the formula needs new blood. Whether audiences follow Gemma into The Further will register at the box office this weekend.
