Bruce Campbell has said, again and without ambiguity, that he is done playing Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise. Speaking on X and elaborated in a Deadline interview published 21 August 2026, Campbell used a phrase that fans of his chainsaw-handed, boomstick-toting alter ego will recognise as final: he "tapped out."
The actor's reasons, as he laid them out, come down to ability and interest in equal measure. Campbell said he did not want Ash to be compromised by declining physical skills, describing himself as a "borderline Geezer" whose interests had diverged from the demands of the role. Deadline
Campbell's exit from the character is not a sudden decision. He starred in Ash vs Evil Dead, the television continuation that ran for three seasons on the US cable network Starz from 2015 to 2018. That series, Campbell said, was where he left the role behind.
The franchise, meanwhile, has kept moving. Evil Dead Rise, directed by Lee Cronin, grossed $147 million at the worldwide box office in 2023 — the highest total of any film in the series. Campbell revealed in June 2026 that he had been offered a cameo in that film and passed. He had previously reprised Ash for a brief post-credits appearance in Fede Álvarez's 2013 Evil Dead reboot, but that was a nod, not a return.
