Harry and Meghan Are Moving Back to Britain — But Not Back Into the Royal Family

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are relocating from California to Britain with their two children, six years after stepping back from royal duties and crossing the Atlantic. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex intend to move later this month to a private, non-royal residence outside London, with Archie and Lilibet set to begin school in the UK in autumn 2026 (People; BBC News).

The story broke on 19 August, when The Telegraph reported the couple's plan to return. Reuters, the New York Times and BBC News confirmed the essentials the same week. As of 20 August, Harry and Meghan had not commented publicly or confirmed the move themselves (ABC News).

What the move does not change is their standing within the royal family. King Charles was told on Sunday, according to BBC News, and welcomed the chance to see more of Harry and his family in a private capacity. Their roles, however, remain untouched: they stay as private individuals and non-working royals under the terms of the 2020 agreement, the arrangement that set out their departure from front-line royal duties. No half-in, half-out option — a middle path Harry once sought, allowing partial royal duties alongside commercial work — was offered (HELLO!).

HELLO! magazine's Royal Editor Emily Nash, speaking on the A Right Royal Podcast, added a detail about how the conversation went. Harry and Meghan may have raised the idea of a UK move with King Charles beforehand, but when they spoke to him on the Sunday, they presented it as a done deal. Prince William also had prior notice of the decision. According to The Times, William was with his father when the news broke on Wednesday (HELLO!).

Harry has expressed a desire to reconcile with his father and spend more time with him, Euronews reported. King Charles has been receiving treatment for cancer, diagnosed in 2024, and Today noted that his health may have factored into the decision to bring the family closer (Euronews; Today).

There is also a professional thread. BBC News reported that Meghan Markle could return to acting once settled in the UK — a prospect that will draw attention given her last screen credit was in the legal drama Suits, which wrapped in 2018 (BBC News).
