Emily Watson Teases 'Dune: Prophecy' Season 2: "A Lot of New Elements" and a Career Turn She Didn't See Coming
Emily Watson says the second season of Dune: Prophecy is shot, under wraps, and full of surprises she is not allowed to share. Speaking at the Variety Lounge during the 2026 Sarajevo Film Festival, Watson teased that Season 2 contains "a lot of new elements" — and stopped there. "My head will blow off" if she says more, she told the audience (Variety).
Watson reprises her role as Valya Harkonnen, the religious leader at the centre of HBO's Dune: Prophecy, a prequel series set in the universe of Frank Herbert's novels. The second season has completed filming but has no release date yet. Collider reported in June that the new season will be bigger in scale, with grander fights and storylines (Collider).
For Watson, the franchise represents a striking detour. Her career was built on independent and arthouse films — Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves, Robert Altman's Gosford Park — and she has described the HBO Max role as a major departure from that path (Variety). Back in November 2024, around the time the first season launched, she had already been openly hoping for a renewal, telling Variety she wanted to keep going with the character (Variety). At the 2026 edition she served as president of the jury and received a Heart of Sarajevo Award (Variety). She spoke candidly about the toll of long shoots — time away from family is hard, she said — and about the importance of building relationships with less experienced people in the independent film world (Variety).

Watson also made clear she is watching the wider Dune universe as a fan. She said she "can't wait to see" Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three, describing herself as a huge admirer of the director (Variety).
