Norris Takes Dutch Grand Prix Pole With "Best Lap of My Life" as Russell Wins Sprint

Lando Norris put his McLaren on pole position for the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, edging Mercedes pair George Russell and Kimi Antonelli by a tenth of a second in qualifying on 22 August.

Norris sealed it with a final Q3 lap of 1 minute 11.263 seconds — the last-gasp, single-lap shootout that decides the top ten grid slots. It was his second pole at Zandvoort and the 18th of his Formula 1 career, and he did not downplay it. He called it the "best lap of my life," admitting his McLaren had struggled in the circuit's slow-speed corners even as its high-speed pace carried him through. The Guardian

Russell and Antonelli lined up second and third, locking out the front of the grid for Mercedes. Oscar Piastri took fourth in the second McLaren, with Lewis Hamilton fifth for Ferrari, Charles Leclerc sixth, and Max Verstappen — the home crowd's favourite — down in seventh for Red Bull.

Earlier the same day, Russell had already won the sprint race — the shorter, roughly 100-kilometre contest run on select weekends that awards separate points. He finished ahead of Leclerc in second and Norris in third, with Antonelli fourth. Russell had also taken sprint pole the day before, beating Norris to the top spot by just 0.041 seconds. Formula 1

The sprint result did not flatter Antonelli's championship lead. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver, who has won five grands prix this season — China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco and Belgium — still tops the standings, with Hamilton 53 points back in second and Russell 56 adrift in third. But Antonelli's weekend was scratchy after he topped the sole practice session on Friday: he ran wide at the penultimate corner during sprint qualifying, an error he said cost him "big time." For Norris, the grand prix pole extends a momentum shift that began in Hungary three weeks ago, where he took pole and converted it into his first win of the season after Piastri retired. McLaren also have history on their side at Zandvoort: Piastri won this race in 2025, Norris won it in 2024, and a third consecutive McLaren victory on Sunday would be a statement result against a Mercedes team that has otherwise dominated the year.

The grid also features Alisha Palmowski, the British driver who took pole in her supporting category's qualifying session during the same Zandvoort weekend. Formula 1

For fans, the headline question is straightforward. Norris has the pace over one lap. Russell already proved he has the pace over a sprint distance. And Antonelli, despite a scrappy weekend so far, still holds the championship lead he has built across a season of relentless consistency.
