Infinity Ward has shipped the first major update to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta, and the loudest complaint from players — literally — is already being addressed. Enemy footsteps and gear audio had both their volume and their audible range reduced, the studio confirmed in the Day 2 patch released on 22 August 2026 (Eurogamer).

"We heard you loud and clear on the footstep volume, so we've adjusted things downward for today," Infinity Ward wrote in the patch notes. The studio's own patch notes page, first published 20 August 2026, is being updated throughout the beta with the latest changes, bug fixes, and live issues.

Footstep audio is a familiar battleground for the franchise. During the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer beta in September 2022, players complained that footsteps were far too loud, giving away enemy positions from long distances. Infinity Ward adjusted the audio for that beta's second weekend, and later overhauled the system so that enemies had to be closer before their footsteps became audible (Eurogamer, 2022). The studio appears to be following the same playbook here: listen to the first wave of feedback, then dial things down quickly.

Beyond audio, the update tuned weapon lethality — what the community calls time-to-kill, the time it takes to eliminate an opponent. Damage ranges and headshot multipliers were reduced on two specific weapons: the ISO Nightshade, a submachine gun, and the Oris 8.6, a marksman rifle (Eurogamer). Both had evidently been hitting harder than Infinity Ward intended.

A new map, Cachette, and a new mode, Inflation, also joined the multiplayer rotation. Inflation is a cash-grab with a twist: players eliminate enemies and defeat HVT (high-value target) operators to collect money, and the richest players on the server become marked targets for everyone else to hunt down (Call of Duty patch notes). Cachette's arrival brought the map pool to four, which Infinity Ward said was the minimum needed to switch on map voting — letting players choose their next battleground from a set of options rather than receiving one at random (Eurogamer).

The existing Transit 213 map received a visibility pass, with shadowed areas brightened and overall colour balance adjusted so players can actually see who is shooting at them.

On the technical side, Infinity Ward said it is working to improve the Secure Attestation Wizard — the tool that diagnoses and fixes problems getting into the beta on PC. Two known issues remain: join-in-progress is still temporarily disabled on the Kill Block map, and cooking certain lethal grenades (holding them before throwing) can cause a frame-rate drop (Eurogamer).

The Modern Warfare 4 beta is currently in Early Access, having opened on 20 August 2026 (Call of Duty). The studio's official blog has said to expect further updates throughout the beta covering bug fixes, gameplay adjustments, and additional maps and modes (Call of Duty blog, 21 August 2026).

For fans, the pace of changes is the takeaway. A beta exists for exactly this kind of tuning, and Infinity Ward is treating player feedback as a live input rather than a post-launch to-do list.
