Hastings Handed Three-Match Ban for Punch as Saints' Play-Off Push Loses Its Captain

St Helens stand-off Jackson Hastings has been suspended for three matches after punching Castleford Tigers prop Tyler Dupree during Friday's 28-6 win at the Jungle (BBC Sport).

Hastings was shown a red card in the first half for throwing punches at Dupree, and the ill-feeling did not stop there. Players from both sides continued clashing off the pitch as the fallout spilled down the tunnel area (Sky Sports). Despite finishing the match a man down, St Helens ran out comfortable winners to keep their slim Super League play-off hopes alive (BBC Sport).

The timing could hardly be worse for Saints. Hastings had been captaining the side in the absence of injured hooker Matty Lees, and his ban covers the final three games of the regular season: home to Leeds Rhinos, away to Leigh Leopards and home to Hull KR (BBC Sport). In rugby league, the play-offs are the knockout stage at the end of the season — and St Helens need every point they can scrape to qualify. Losing their on-field leader for the run-in is a significant blow.

For St Helens, the arithmetic is brutal. Three games remain, three points likely separate them from the top six, and the man who has been steering the ship is now watching from the stands. Head coach Paul Wellens will need to reshuffle his halves and find a new voice to marshall the side under pressure.
