Orlando Bloom to Receive Filming Italy International Award at Venice Film Festival
Orlando Bloom will receive the Filming Italy International Award at the 83rd Venice Film Festival on 6 September 2026, as announced by Tiziana Rocca, who heads Filming Italy and leads the Taormina Film Festival, in a statement reported by Variety Variety.
The ceremony is scheduled at the Sala degli Stucchi of the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido di Venezia, the thin barrier island that hosts the festival each year. The award, conceived and directed by Rocca herself, is presented during the festival's run from 2 to 12 September Cinecittà News.
Bloom will already be on the Lido for a bigger reason: he is part of the cast of Werner Herzog's "Bucking Fastard," one of the feature films selected for the festival's main competition — the section that vies for the Golden Lion, Venice's top prize. The film runs 109 minutes and is a co-production between Ireland and the United States La Biennale di Venezia. Its cast also includes real-life sisters Kate and Rooney Mara, alongside Domhnall Gleeson La Biennale di Venezia.
The story, as described in Variety, gives Bloom the role of Gareth Mulroney, the lover of twin sisters Jean and Joan Holbrooke, played by the Mara sisters. It is a return to the festival's competition lineup for Herzog, whose selection was confirmed when the full Venice programme was unveiled in late July Cineuropa.
The 83rd edition's competition comprises a maximum of 21 feature-length films, all presented as world premieres La Biennale di Venezia. "Bucking Fastard" is one of them, meaning its first public screening anywhere will take place on the Lido.
For Bloom, the Venice trip caps a busy stretch of recent work. He recently appeared in Sean Ellis' boxing thriller "The Cut," which he also produced through his company Amazing Owl, and in the crime comedy caper "Deep Cover," a Prime Video UK original directed by Tom Kingsley Variety.
The Herzog film will travel beyond Venice as well. Herzog is set to receive the Donostia Award — the career honour of the San Sebastian International Film Festival — and that event will be accompanied by a screening of "Bucking Fastard" San Sebastian Film Festival.
For festivalgoers, the 6 September ceremony offers a chance to see Bloom recognised alongside the competition premiere of his latest film. Two appearances on the Lido in a single week, one on screen and one at the podium.
