Olivia Rodrigo surprise-released a new single called 'Serena Joy' on Friday, 21 August 2026, first as a limited-edition CD pressed in just 500 copies and then on digital streaming platforms, the services most listeners use day to day Rolling Stone AU; Consequence.

The song takes its name from a character in Margaret Atwood's novel The Handmaid's Tale. In the Hulu television adaptation, Serena Joy is the wife of a high-ranking commander in Gilead, a totalitarian patriarchy; the character is played by Yvonne Strahovski opposite Elisabeth Moss as June Pitchfork. Across the series, Serena Joy undergoes a crisis of faith and ultimately helps June assassinate members of Gilead's leadership Pitchfork.
Rodrigo's lyrics lean into that political territory. The opening lines — "Yeah it's all for the cause, for the good of us all" and "and if you close your eyes, then it can't be your fault" — read as a voice rationalising complicity, and Consequence has described the track as politically charged Consequence; Pitchfork. The festival's net proceeds — the money left after costs — will be donated to charities including Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights Pitchfork.
Later in the year, Rodrigo takes You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love on the road for the Unraveled Tour, with openers Grace Ives, Wolf Alice, Devon Again, the Last Dinner Party and Die Spitz Pitchfork.
For fans, the small-batch CD drop at a single independent shop echoes a release strategy more associated with vinyl era tactics than modern pop rollouts. The streaming release arrived shortly after, ensuring the song reached anyone with a phone rather than only the 500 who walked out of Analog Music Shop with a disc.
