Aston Villa Pursue Joel Ordonez After Konsa Sale Leaves Gap at the Back
Aston Villa have made a formal club-to-club approach to Club Brugge for centre-back Joel Ordonez, with talks under way and a proposed deal worth £51 million plus add-ons (The Athletic). Villa are racing to reinforce their defence before the transfer window shuts on 1 September.
The need is glaring. Villa lost 4-0 to Brighton in their opening match of the season on Sunday, and they have sold England defender Ezri Konsa to Arsenal, with Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne also departing this summer (BBC Sport). A back line stripped of experience and personnel is the headline problem, and the club know it.
Ordonez is a 22-year-old Ecuador international who played for his country at the 2025 summer World Cup. He has made 124 appearances for Club Brugge since joining from Independiente del Valle — the Ecuadorian academy that has produced a generation of top-level talent — in 2022 (BBC Sport). Club Brugge want a minimum of £40 million for him, and the Belgian club have already shown they will hold firm: they rejected a bid from Crystal Palace for the same player in February (The Athletic).
Villa's interest in Ordonez is not their first attempt to plug the defensive gap. Their £18 million offer for Southampton's Taylor Harwood-Bellis was rejected, with a significant gap in valuation between the two clubs (BBC Sport). Southampton had no appetite to sell at that price, and Villa moved on.
There is further uncertainty around the squad. Ollie Watkins, the club's talismanic striker, is a transfer target for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, and questions about his future remain open (BBC Sport).
For Villa fans, the first weeks of the season carry an uncomfortable tension. A squad that competed in Europe's elite competition has been hollowed out, and the replacement work is still in progress. The Ordonez deal — if it crosses the line — would bring a young, World Cup-tested defender into the building. If it does not, the window closes on 1 September and Villa will have to work with what they have.
That is a prospect nobody at Villa Park wants to dwell on after a 4-0 opening-day defeat.
