Paramount Pictures is developing a sequel to the 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, with Kate Hudson attached to produce and the studio's intention that she and Matthew McConaughey reprise their original roles. Variety reported the news exclusively on 24 August 2026, with both Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter independently confirming the project.

The sequel is in early development. No screenwriter is attached, no logline exists, and key creative roles — including a director — have not yet been filled, according to Variety and Deadline. In other words, this is a project with a title and a star's blessing, but no script.

Hudson will produce alongside Stacey Sher through her Shiny Penny banner. Sher's credits span some of the most recognisable films of the past three decades: Pulp Fiction, Gattaca, Erin Brockovich, Vanilla Sky and Django Unchained (Variety). Representatives for Hudson and McConaughey did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment.

The original How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days arrived in cinemas in February 2003, directed by Donald Petrie from a screenplay by Kristen Buckley, Brian Regan and Burr Steers. It grossed nearly $180 million worldwide on a reported $50 million budget — a solid return for a mid-budget romantic comedy (Variety; Deadline). The supporting cast included Kathryn Hahn, Adam Goldberg, Thomas Lennon, Michael Michele and Shalom Harlow.

Hudson and McConaughey have been openly receptive to the idea of a return. In 2024, Hudson said on Watch What Happens Live that she would be open to starring in a sequel (Variety, 2024), a sentiment she reinforced in a separate interview that year (Variety, 2025). McConaughey has described the film as an "anchor" in the romantic-comedy canon (Variety). Interestingly, he once revealed that a fortune teller's prophecy helped convince him to take the role in the first place (Variety, 2023).

Both stars have kept busy. Hudson earned her second Oscar nomination for 2025's Song Sung Blue, her first having come for Almost Famous in 2001. She is currently leading the Netflix sports comedy series Running Point. McConaughey won the Best Actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club in 2014 and recently ended a six-year big-screen hiatus with The Rivals of Amziah King (Variety).

For fans of the original, the gap between wish and screen remains wide. Early development means no start date, no script and no confirmed cast beyond the stated intention. But with Hudson producing, Sher's experienced hand on the project, and both leads publicly on board, the pieces are at least in motion.
