Issa Rae Returns to HBO with Boxing Comedy Pilot Set in Las Vegas
HBO has ordered a comedy pilot from Issa Rae, roughly a decade after her series Insecure first premiered on the network. The pilot is currently being referred to as the Untitled Male Friendship Show, according to Variety.
Rae is writing and executive producing the project. A pilot order means HBO will film a single episode to decide whether to pick up the full series — no guarantee of a series commitment yet.
The show's official logline, as reported by Variety, follows Menzel, a 30-year-old barber, aspiring sports manager and professional best friend to JB, an up-and-coming boxer. Together they navigate ambition, insecurity, loneliness and the double-edged sword of success inside the high-stakes world of professional boxing in Las Vegas.
For Rae, the pilot brings her back to the network where Insecure — the comedy she created and starred in, centred on the friendship of two modern-day Black women — became a signature title across five seasons.
The new project shifts the lens: male friendship rather than female friendship, and the fight game rather than Los Angeles neighbourhood life. But the creative instinct is recognisable — relationships under pressure, the gap between where someone is and where they want to be.
What happens next is straightforward in trade terms. HBO will produce the pilot, review it, and then either order it to series or pass. That decision typically takes weeks to months. If ordered to series, a writers' room opens, production scales up, and a crew of well over a hundred people gets to work on a full season.
