Neil LaBute to Receive Career Honor at Oldenburg Film Festival, With World Premiere of 'Murderous'
Neil LaBute will receive a career honor at the 33rd Oldenburg International Film Festival, which also hosts the world premiere of his latest film, Murderous, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The festival runs 16–20 September in the northern German city. Alongside the tribute, Oldenburg will mount a retrospective spanning LaBute's nearly three-decade career, screening five titles: In the Company of Men (1997), Your Friends & Neighbors (1998), Nurse Betty (2000), Some Velvet Morning (2013), and House of Darkness (2022).
LaBute will attend with Gia Crovatin, who leads the cast of Murderous. The film stars Crovatin as an up-and-coming screenwriter who receives an unwanted visit from a former partner. Made entirely independently, the thriller carries no studio or distributor attachment — a notable detail at a festival that has long positioned itself as a showcase for work outside the major-studio system.
The retrospective covers a career that began with In the Company of Men, which won the film-makers' award at the Sundance Film Festival and was picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics. Nurse Betty, LaBute's 2000 dark comedy starring Renée Zellweger and Morgan Freeman, grossed $30 million worldwide.
In announcing the tribute, the festival praised LaBute's unflinching view of the world — a through-line from the corporate cruelty of his debut to the stripped-down chamber pieces of his more recent work.
For a film-maker who has spent his career moving between studios and the indie fringe, the Oldenburg programme lands as a single package: a new film without a distributor, a retrospective that draws a line from 1997 to 2022, and a career award from a festival that champions precisely the kind of cinema LaBute has kept making between bigger-budget assignments.
