Bruno Fernandes Crowned PFA Player of the Year After Sweep of Season Honours

Bruno Fernandes has been named the 2026 PFA Players' Player of the Year, completing a clean sweep of English football's major individual awards after a season in which he led Manchester United to third place.

The award was announced at a ceremony at The Opera House in Manchester on August 25, 2026. Fernandes — United's captain and creative heartbeat, a playmaker whose job is to supply the final pass or finish the chance — said he was "very proud" to receive the honour, according to BBC Sport.

The PFA award carries a particular weight because it is voted for by fellow professionals. Players across the Premier League choose the winner from a shortlist of six, which this year also included Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland, among others, as confirmed when the PFA published its shortlists in June (The PFA).

For Fernandes, the recognition follows a familiar pattern through 2026. He was named the Football Writers' Association men's player of the year on May 8 (Reuters). A fortnight later, on May 23, he added the Premier League's own player-of-the-season award after guiding United to a third-place finish (Reuters). The PFA prize rounds out the set — the one players hand to one of their own.

Fernandes was not the only winner celebrated on the night. The PFA's women's award went to Shaw, with BBC Sport confirming both results. The ceremony also recognised one of the game's greats. Sir Kenny Dalglish received the 2026 PFA Merit Award — a lifetime honour for contribution to football (The PFA). Dalglish himself won the PFA Players' Player of the Year in the 1982/83 season, a link across more than four decades that ties Fernandes's name to one of the sport's most decorated figures.
