A Late-August Heat Dome Is Putting 45 Million Americans at Risk

More than 45 million people across the south-western United States face daytime highs of 110–115°F (43–46°C) through the end of August and into early September 2026, as the National Weather Service tracks a persistent heat dome over the region. Overnight cooling will be limited, and some record highs could be tied or broken before the event recedes. The NWS has categorized the heat as Extreme HeatRisk, a designation reserved for conditions dangerous to anyone without adequate hydration and a way to cool down.
A heat dome forms when a strong high-pressure system parks over a region, trapping hot air beneath it like a lid on a pot and blocking cooler air masses from moving in. Ground temperatures rise and stay elevated as long as that ridge of high pressure holds. The current pattern is doing exactly that across the southern tier of the country, from southern California through Arizona and into the southern Plains.
The NWS office in Phoenix, Arizona has an extreme heat warning in effect from 4:30 AM on August 24 through 8 PM on August 29. A forecast page for southwestern Arizona showed a heat index of 97°F (36°C) at 3:30 AM, pointing to the near-total absence of overnight relief. The NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard (LOX) office has its own extreme heat warning running until 8 PM PDT on August 28, with high temperatures up to 110 degrees expected and conditions described as dangerously hot. An excessive heat warning, as defined by the NWS St. Louis office, is issued when the heat index — a measure combining temperature and humidity — is expected to reach roughly 110°F for two days or 105°F across four consecutive days.
Los Angeles has announced it will open cooling centers to give residents relief from the heat dome. The city's response aligns with the NWS's broader health-hazard warning, which flags the particular danger of prolonged exposure during a multi-day event where nighttime temperatures fail to drop enough for the human body to recover.
The heat dome's structure is also driving secondary weather hazards. The NWS forecast monsoonal moisture pushing into the south-west, portions of the Rocky Mountains, and the Plains, bringing heavy scattered showers and thunderstorms. Monsoonal flow — a seasonal pattern where moisture streams north from the tropics — is expected to enhance rainfall across the Four Corners region into the central Rockies, while thunderstorms, some severe, are forecast across the Plains into the Midwest with locally heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding. The pairing of extreme heat and convective moisture creates a compound risk profile, where the same ridge responsible for the heat also feeds instability on its edges.
This is not the first heat dome event of the 2026 season. On July 26–27, an extreme heat event driven by the northeast quadrant of a heat dome and an associated upper-level ridge produced extreme heat warnings across several states, including Wisconsin, with high heat and extreme dew points. The late-August episode extends the pattern into a period when many regions would typically begin seeing temperature declines.
The public-health stakes extend beyond the immediate event. No Heat Stroke, an organization that tracks pediatric vehicular heatstroke, reported 34 children died in hot cars in the US in 2025, with cases occurring as late as December in parts of the south. Sustained extreme heat adds to the risk of such incidents.
The broader context here matters. Research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences finds that climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of summer extreme weather events in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. A multi-day heat dome over the south-western US in late August, with overnight lows remaining elevated and records under threat, fits that trajectory. The question for emergency managers, utility operators, and public-health officials is not whether such events will recur but how much strain successive episodes place on aging infrastructure and vulnerable populations before the seasonal cooldown arrives.
For now, the forecast is unambiguous: dangerous heat persists across southern California, the Southwest, and the southern Plains through at least August 29, with monsoonal moisture adding flood risk to the southern Rockies and Plains. The NWS is advising affected populations to treat Extreme HeatRisk as a life-threatening condition, not a comfort issue.
