Hulu's "Welcome to the Family" Revisits the Dan Markel Murder With First-Time Interviews and Exclusive Audio
A four-part docuseries about the murder of Florida law professor Dan Markel lands on Hulu on 1 September, bringing new voices and exclusive recordings to a case that has already produced five convictions.
Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel is produced by Curious Films for ABC News Studios and directed by Sebastian Smith, according to Deadline. Lily Fletcher produces; Dov Freedman and Charlie Russell executive produce for Curious Films, with David Sloan and Claire Weinraub executive producing for ABC News Studios.
Markel, a lawyer and legal scholar teaching at Florida State University, was shot and killed in Tallahassee in 2014 in what prosecutors described as a murder-for-hire rooted in a bitter child-custody dispute. He had divorced Wendi Adelson, and prosecutors said her family orchestrated the killing so that she could relocate with the couple's two children.
Five people have been convicted in connection with the killing: Donna Adelson, Charlie Adelson, Sigfredo Garcia, Katherine Magbanua and Luis Rivera. Wendi Adelson was never charged but was named by prosecutors as an "unindicted co-conspirator" — meaning investigators identified her as part of the scheme but did not bring a criminal case against her.
The series' draw is its access. It features exclusive audio and first-time interviews, including a recorded conversation with Rob Adelson, the estranged eldest son of the Adelson family, in which he discusses the case and his decision to testify against his mother, Donna, at her trial. The FBI agent Pat Sanford, who spent half his career on the investigation, speaks publicly for the first time. June Umchina, an ex-girlfriend of Charlie Adelson, reveals what Charlie told her about the murder.
Curious Films, the British production company behind the series, has a track record in high-profile documentary-making. Its previous credits include Sky's Boyzone: No Matter What, Disney+'s Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth, and Netflix documentaries A Toxic Love Story, Lover, Stalker, Killer and The Man with 1000 Kids.
Hulu already touches the Markel case in CrimeFeed, a true-crime series hosted by Nancy Grace and Derrick Levasseur that covered the murder in one of its episodes. The new four-part series gives the story its own dedicated run, with material that has not surfaced in prior coverage.
For viewers who have followed the case through news reports and court filings, the appeal is straightforward: new interviewees, previously unheard audio, and a single family's fracture laid out across four episodes. For everyone else, it is a compact entry point into one of the most closely watched murder-for-hire cases in recent American legal history.
