Grand Theft Auto 6 Details Emerge: Couple Mechanics, Reactive Worlds, and a Netflix Premiere

Rockstar Games has confirmed a suite of new Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay details, from seamless character-switching between the game's two leads to a body-weight system that visibly changes how they look — all revealed in an exclusive deep dive published by British magazine Dazed ahead of its autumn 2026 issue.
The Dazed excerpt, published online on 26 August 2026, outlines a game where players can control Jason or Lucia separately, as a couple, or switch between them on the fly — including mid-mission. One example: Jason driving while Lucia scrolls through in-game social media, or flipping between driving and shooting during a car chase. The full issue goes on sale internationally from 10 September 2026 (Dazed).
The relationship between Jason and Lucia sits at the centre of the game. It shifts based on what the pair go through and how the player reacts as either character. Players can also do couple activities — hitting the beach, riding a jetski — and the story allows them to split up and operate independently (Eurogamer).
Grand Theft Auto 6 also brings back body-weight mechanics last seen in 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Eating without exercising has visible effects on a character's body, as does regularly lifting weights. IGN reported that eating affects characters' weight while working out changes their build and strength — a set of role-playing-game-style systems that extend to how players take care of both protagonists (IGN).
The game's world reacts more deeply to player behaviour than Rockstar's previous titles. A morality system described as going further than Red Dead Redemption 2's honour system — where player choices shifted how the world perceived the protagonist — governs how NPCs and the environment respond. Walk around openly carrying a rifle, and the world reacts accordingly (Eurogamer).
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's head of development and co-studio head, told Dazed the studio wants to enable as much self-expression as possible without losing the essence of the characters. Part of the development process involved Rockstar travelling to Miami for research, meeting real residents from all walks of life (Eurogamer).
Rockstar has also faced scrutiny during development. The company was accused of union-busting after firing dozens of developers working on the game (Eurogamer).
For fans, the Dazed excerpt is not the only window into the game this week. A film titled Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix on 27 August 2026 at 3 p.m. ET, and will also be available on Rockstar's official channel (Rockstar Games).
Grand Theft Auto 6 is set for release on 26 May 2026 — a date Rockstar confirmed as later than previously expected (Rockstar Games).
