Sámi Musical Drama 'Árru' Lands North American Distribution With Obscured Releasing
Obscured Releasing has acquired North American rights to Árru, a Sámi musical drama that has been building festival momentum since its Berlin premiere, with a theatrical release planned for early 2027 (Deadline).
Written and directed by Elle Sofe Sara, the film follows a family of Sámi reindeer herders whose ancestral land faces an encroaching mining project. Single mother Maia, played by Sara Marielle Gaup Beaska, turns to a long-lost family member — played by Mikkel Gaup — and the reunion stirs long-buried wounds and secrets. The story uses traditional Sámi song and dance as vehicles for familial catharsis and the connections between communities and their lands (Deadline).
The film confronts abuse of land and body, and the perseverance needed to overcome both, according to its Tribeca festival listing (Tribeca Film Festival).
Árru has travelled the festival circuit with purpose. After its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, it screened at Sydney and the Nordic Film Festival before making its North American premiere at Tribeca (Deadline). Festival premieres are where sales agents and buyers first see films; from there, distribution deals like this one determine which screens a film reaches, and when.
The North American deal was negotiated by Steven Bestwick of The Yellow Affair — the film's international sales agent — alongside Bill Guentzler and RJ Millard on behalf of Obscured Releasing. The Yellow Affair has also closed a string of international territory sales: Angel Distribution took Denmark, Bíó Paradís took Iceland, Filmwelt took Germany and Austria, Fivia took ex-Yugoslavia, Otaku Mtü took the Baltics, and Palace took Australia and New Zealand. Norsk Filmdistribusjon will handle the theatrical release in Norway (Deadline).
The film is a co-production involving Elle Sofe Company (Sápmi), Garagefilm International (Sweden), and It's Alive (Finland) (Variety; Deadline). Producers are Elisa Fernanda Pirir, Mimmi Spång, Elle Sofe Sara, and Jani Pösö. Executive producers include Jim Stark, Kristine Ann Skaret, Gary Cranner, and Axel Helgeland (Deadline).
After its theatrical run in early 2027, Árru will launch on digital platforms later the same year. That window — the gap between a film's cinema release and its availability for home viewing — keeps the film on big screens first before reaching wider audiences online.
