Netflix Lands 27 Minutes of New Grand Theft Auto VI Footage in Six-Hour Exclusive

Netflix dropped 27 minutes of new Grand Theft Auto VI footage on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET, giving players their longest look yet at one of the most anticipated games in years. The special, titled Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, premiered exclusively on Netflix for six hours before moving to YouTube and other platforms at 9 p.m. ET, per Rockstar Games' official Newswire and confirmed by Variety Variety.

The footage was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, according to Netflix and Rockstar, which is owned by Take-Two Interactive Variety. Prior to this drop, fans had seen only two trailers over the past three years. This 27-minute special is the deepest dive into the game's world that Rockstar has released.

The six-hour window is the whole play. Netflix gets the content first; Rockstar's own YouTube channel and other platforms receive it at 9 p.m. ET the same day Mashable. Rockstar announced the arrangement on August 6 through its Newswire Rockstar Newswire.

For creators, Rockstar posted guidance on X on Wednesday allowing reaction content across social and video platforms once the special debuts. Livestreaming is permitted from 3 p.m. ET on August 27, provided creators add context or commentary and do not simply repost the unedited video in full Variety.

Netflix described the event as "the next evolution of storytelling and content" on its platform Variety. The streaming service has been building a games library alongside its film and television catalogue, and adding a high-profile game reveal to that mix puts Netflix in a different slot — one traditionally occupied by gaming showcases and publisher livestreams.

Alongside the GTA VI event, Rockstar made Red Dead Redemption available free on Netflix for the first time for subscribers, and added it to the GTA+ Games catalog Rockstar Newswire. The move gives Netflix subscribers a full Rockstar title to play at no additional cost on the same platform that just hosted the GTA VI reveal.

The GTA VI event arrives as Rockstar continues to deal with ongoing gameplay leaks. The developer filed subpoenas related to the leaks the previous week and issued its first public statement about the situation on Wednesday Variety.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release in November.
