Stuart Fails To Save the Universe: Kevin Sussman and Lauren Lapkus on the Episode 6 Void Scene That Left Them Speechless

Episode 6 of HBO Max's Stuart Fails To Save the Universe sends its four leads into a universe where people have descended from cows — they eat plants, chew their cud, and the set came with, as Lauren Lapkus put it, "lots of hay, lots of grass and lots of choking related to the food regurgitating" (Deadline).

But the cud-chewing is not the half of it. The episode splits the group: Kripke (John Ross Bowie) and Bert (Brian Posehn) want to leave the cow-descended universe, while Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and Denise (Lauren Lapkus) choose to stay. Stuart and Denise then meet a new version of Raj, played again by Kunal Nayyar — his second appearance in the series, per TVLine. This Raj, though, does not mention the broken device his post-apocalyptic self nearly fixed back in Episode 1.

Things escalate. Stuart and Denise get scolded by a Stuart from another dimension, then order a second copy of the machine that drives the multiverse hopping. That decision dumps them into the same endless void between universes where Kripke and Bert are already stuck falling — with no floor in sight (Deadline).

Filming that void scene was genuinely frightening. Lapkus and Sussman told Deadline that the horror on their faces during the falling sequence was not just acting, and that the screams were hard to muster. The production dropped the actors on high wires 30 feet in the air to shoot the scene. When they were first dropped, Sussman said, it was so much faster and scarier than either of them expected that neither could scream.

Lapkus described the sensation in stark terms. When you are actually scared, she said, you cannot scream — comparing it to recurring nightmares where you try to scream and nothing comes out. When you are falling and genuinely frightened, you swallow it and choke. She called the whole experience terrifying (Deadline).

Season 1 of the spinoff, which debuted on HBO Max on 23 July, has clearly demanded more from its cast than a standard sitcom set. Lapkus told Deadline the whole season was "crazy," including scenes filmed in the Matrix — bald caps, goo pods, the works — on top of the wire work for the void.

For context, Stuart Fails To Save the Universe follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, who accidentally creates a new multiverse and must locate a device to stop Armageddon and restore reality, according to HBO Max's official synopsis. The series, from Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television, was given a straight-to-series order by HBO Max — meaning no pilot was shot first — with the network announcing the pickup in July 2025 (Warner Bros. Discovery press).

The Season 1 cast is rounded out by Sussman, Lapkus, Posehn and Bowie, all reprising characters from The Big Bang Theory universe (Warner Bros. Discovery press).

For fans of the original series, Episode 6's cow-descended universe and Raj's quiet return add another wrinkle to a spinoff that is clearly willing to go to strange, physically demanding places — wires, hay and all.
