Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore Share Songs From Their 'Threshold' Film Score
Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore have shared three songs from their score for the documentary Threshold, about Olympic cross-country skier Jessie Diggins. The tracks — "Cold Open," "Sick and Tired," and "Gallivare 10km" — arrive ahead of the score's full release on November 20 (Pitchfork).
Threshold follows Diggins through a single high-stakes World Cup season with the U.S. Ski Team, including races held above the Arctic Circle. The film was directed by Lars and Torsten Brinkema and premiered on NBC's Peacock service on February 23, 2026, following the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics (U.S. Ski & Snowboard). As of August 28, 2026, the documentary becomes available on Amazon Prime, Apple TV and YouTube, broadening its reach well beyond its initial streaming home (U.S. Ski & Snowboard).
This is the second collaborative album from Barwick and Lattimore in the same year. Their debut as a duo, Tragic Magic, came out in January and was backed by a joint tour. Speaking about the difference between the two projects, Mary Lattimore said in a press release that Tragic Magic was made with tight constraints on instruments but total sonic freedom, while Threshold offered an expansive palette — the music shaped by the framework of Diggins's life and the directors' vision (Pitchfork).
Barwick is known for her layered, wordless vocal compositions; Lattimore is a harpist whose work spans solo albums and film scores. Their pairing on Tragic Magic drew attention for the way it merged those two distinct textures — voice treated as architecture, harp as melody and atmosphere — and the Threshold score extends that collaboration into a documentary context where the music serves a narrative about endurance and ambition at the elite level of winter sport.
For Diggins, the subject at the centre of the film, cross-country skiing has meant a place in Olympic history: she and teammate Kikkan Randall won the United States' first-ever cross-country skiing gold medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. Threshold picks up the story from there, tracking the pressures of a full World Cup season rather than a single Olympic moment.
The score's November 20 release will arrive roughly three months after the documentary's wider streaming expansion, giving listeners who encounter the film on Amazon Prime, Apple TV or YouTube a soundtrack that can stand on its own. For Barwick and Lattimore, it also caps a year in which they moved from a debut duo album to a commissioned film score — two projects, two sets of creative parameters, and a clear signal that the collaboration has legs.
