Aston Villa Swap Watkins for Jackson: The Numbers Behind a £65m Striker Deal
Aston Villa have signed Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea on a permanent transfer, with Chelsea confirming the move on their official website on 28 August 2026. Villa will pay £47.5m upfront in a package worth up to £65m, according to The Athletic. The deal reunites Jackson with Unai Emery, who coached the striker at Villarreal before his 2023 move to Chelsea.
Jackson's arrival was expected to trigger the departure of Ollie Watkins, who has agreed a move to Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal for around £50m, as reported by Sky Sports. Watkins joined Villa in 2020 and became one of the Premier League's most reliable forwards, recording 21 goals and five assists last season. He started 43 matches and played almost three times as many minutes as Jackson, who started only 15 of his 34 appearances for Chelsea.
The underlying numbers paint a picture that may surprise fans who remember Jackson's occasional misses. Last season Jackson averaged 3.8 shots per 90 minutes, well above Watkins' 2.6, and 2.2 shots on target per 90 compared with Watkins' 1.2. His expected-goals figure — a measure of chance quality — was 0.7 per 90, against Watkins' 0.5. He also averaged 8.5 touches in the opposition box per 90, far more than Watkins' 5.6. According to BBC Sport, among players with at least 5,000 Premier League minutes since January 2020, only Erling Haaland has a higher non-penalty xG per 90 than Jackson's 0.55.
What gives pause is the finishing. Over two Chelsea seasons, Jackson scored 14 goals from 18.7 xG in 2023-24 and 10 from 12.3 xG the following year. Underperforming your xG means scoring fewer goals than the quality of your chances suggests you should — and Jackson did that in both campaigns. Across his time in English football he has converted 18 of 61 big chances, while Watkins has scored 24 of 73 since joining Villa. Last season the gap narrowed: Jackson converted 19.6% of his shots and 40.9% of his big chances, compared with Watkins' 18.9% and 43.2%.
For Emery, the bet is that familiarity and a system built to create chances will coax the ruthless finishing out of a player who gets into the right positions with rare frequency. Jackson arrived at Chelsea from Villarreal in June 2023 and even signed a contract extension through 2033 in 2024. Now 24, he heads to a club where the man in the dugout already knows exactly what he has.
The deal also forms part of a wider exchange between the two clubs. Morgan Rogers moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea in July 2026, signing a contract until 2033, as confirmed by Chelsea's website. Watkins, if his Al Hilal switch goes through, will leave having scored 24 of 73 big chances for Villa — a record that, alongside his 21 goals last season, gives Emery a high standard to replace.
