Modders Unlocked Nvidia's Unreleased DLSS 5 From an NBA 2K27 Build — and It's Already Running in Over a Dozen Games

An experimental version of Nvidia's unreleased DLSS 5 technology leaked inside an early access build of NBA 2K27, and modders had it unlocked and running across multiple games within hours.

The discovery centres on a 158 MB file — identified as NVIDIA DLSSNR version 310.8.0.0 — found in the NBA 2K27 early access build, carrying a signing date in August 2026 (VideoCardz, TechPowerUp). DLSS, short for Deep Learning Super Sampling, is Nvidia's suite of AI-driven rendering tools that boost frame rates, reduce input lag, and improve image quality on its GeForce RTX graphics cards. DLSS 5, which Nvidia officially describes as introducing "a real-time neural rendering model that infuses pixels with photoreal lighting and materials," has not yet been given a release date (Nvidia). The company's press release from March 2026 says it is arriving this fall (Nvidia Investor Relations).

The RenoDX modding community built a crude toolset around the leaked library almost immediately. By August 28, the mod was running in more than a dozen games, including Cyberpunk 2077, Grand Theft Auto V, Control, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and A Hat in Time (VideoCardz, GameSpot). In Control, the mod applies DLSS 5's neural rendering to the protagonist's character model, offering seven different visual styles — though the current implementation only affects characters, not the full scene (VideoCardz).

Performance, however, takes a severe hit. Modders got the toolset working across RTX 50- and 40-series cards, but the neural rendering filters consume large amounts of GPU video memory and can halve frame rates (GameSpot). On an RTX 5070 Ti running at 4K resolution, the implementation was described as effectively unusable, with a measured performance loss approaching 50% (VideoCardz). HDR does not work correctly in the current mod, with testing focused on standard dynamic range. The neural rendering pass runs late in the graphics pipeline — after upscaling and possibly after tone mapping — using the same input data already available to regular DLSS, according to RenoDX contributor speedlemur.

The experimental implementation has not been added to a public RenoDX release. It remains a testing tool, not a finished product.

Nvidia revealed DLSS 5 earlier this year to widespread backlash, prompting CEO Jensen Huang to soften his response in March: "I don't love AI slop myself" (VideoCardz). The company released DLSS 4.5 during Gamescom 2026 on August 25, introducing a next-generation Ray Reconstruction model — a neural technique that improves image quality in games using ray tracing, which simulates light physically rather than faking it (Nvidia).

For PC gamers, the leak offers an early, rough look at what Nvidia's neural rendering pipeline can do to character models and scenes — and a clear signal that, at least in this experimental form, the hardware demands are steep. The finished product, whenever it arrives this fall, may look very different from what modders are testing now.
