Killer Tomatoes Return: Fifth Film Heads to VOD in October After Theatrical Run

The killer tomatoes are coming back — this time to your living room. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence, the fifth instalment in the cult horror-comedy series that began in 1978, will arrive on VOD platforms on 6 October 2026, following a theatrical release that opened in select US cities on 7 August, according to Deadline.
Directed by David Ferino, a former head of video production at Deadline Hollywood, the film continues the franchise built by original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes creators Costa Dillon and Steve Peace. The plot follows a young biotech prodigy who engineers a genetically modified vegetable that spirals out of control, unleashing a fresh generation of murderous tomatoes. The film carries a PG-13 rating for violent content, as reported by Bloody Disgusting on 30 July.
The cast leans heavily into genre and comedy veterans. John Astin reprises his role as Professor Gangreen, the mad scientist figure from earlier entries in the series. He is joined by David Koechner, Eric Roberts, Catherine Corcoran, Dan Bakkedahl, Myrna Velasco, Vernée Watson, Paul Bates, Zachary Roozen, Samantha Bailey, and Noor Razooky, per Deadline. Production took place in Southern California.
The release comes through a strategic distribution partnership between Starboard Entertainment, founded by Thomas Zambeck, and Stonecutter Media, led by Owner and President Steven Karel. The film was produced in association with Atomic Toybox Entertainment. Stonecutter Media's previous titles include Red Wing, which featured Glen Powell in his first leading film role alongside Bill Paxton and Luke Perry.
The franchise launched nearly half a century ago with the original 1978 film, a low-budget satire that became a midnight-movie staple and spawned sequels, an animated series, and a video game. Organic Intelligence is billed as "pitting the eternal power of nature against AI's best and brightest," per Deadline, tying the latest chapter to a very contemporary anxiety about genetic engineering run amok.
Theatrical screenings began 7 August in major cities including Los Angeles, with the VOD release set to bring the film to a wider audience on 6 October. An IMDb listing for the title shows a US release date of 20 February 2026, which conflicts with the August theatrical opening reported by Deadline; the August date is confirmed by both Deadline and the official Attack of the Killer Tomatoes website, which hosts the film's trailer.
For fans of the long-running series, Organic Intelligence marks the first new Killer Tomatoes feature in years — and with John Astin back as Professor Gangreen, it keeps a thread alive that stretches all the way to the original 1978 creation.
