Grand Theft Auto 6 Gameplay Reveal Draws Nearly 4 Million Peak Viewers, Breaking 2026 Streaming Records
Grand Theft Auto 6's first gameplay presentation peaked at 3,970,738 viewers across livestreaming platforms, making it the biggest gaming stream of 2026 so far, according to Streams Charts data Eurogamer.
The reveal, titled "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look," premiered on Netflix on Thursday, August 27 at 3 p.m. ET (8 p.m. UK time), and launched simultaneously on Rockstar Games' own channels. Rockstar had announced the premiere date on August 6. Demand was heavy enough to cause technical issues on both Netflix and Twitch, locking some viewers out for 40 to 50 minutes.
Despite the disruptions, the numbers were enormous. The broadcast drew coverage from 9,038 streamers and racked up 5,227,798 hours watched, according to Streams Charts. Twitch carried the largest audience share at roughly 44 percent of total hours watched, ahead of YouTube at 34.8 percent and Kick at 20.2 percent. Spanish streamer Juan Alberto "IlloJuan" Garcia led individual viewership with 233,520 peak viewers, followed by Rubius at 191,056 and IShowSpeed at 177,887.
The GTA 6 reveal's peak of 3.97 million viewers surpassed Summer Game Fest 2026's peak of 3.81 million, as well as June's Nintendo Direct and State of Play broadcasts. Streams Charts also tracked more than 100,000 chat messages about the reveal across the three-hour window it analysed.
The internet's infrastructure felt it too. Cloudflare reported that Netflix's global traffic rose 16 percent compared to previous weeks as the Extended Look aired, with the spike sharper in the UK at 45 percent. Twitch averaged a 12 percent traffic increase over the three hours following the premiere, peaking at 35 percent. YouTube jumped 39 percent when the trailer went live. The biggest swing of all belonged to Rockstar's own website, which climbed 172 percent. Netflix US viewership spiked by 50 percent on the day of the broadcast, according to audience data cited by IGN IGN.
For context, the GTA 6 marketing cycle has been gradual. Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive announced Grand Theft Auto VI in a press release dated November 28, 2023, initially indicating a 2025 release window. A second trailer followed on May 2, 2025. The game is set in the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City.
Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to launch on Thursday, November 19, 2026 Rockstar Games.
