Pogacar crashes out of Vuelta a España, handing race lead to Enric Mas
Tadej Pogacar abandoned the 2026 Vuelta a España on stage eight after a crash that left him with a cut face and an injured left shoulder. It is the first time the Slovenian has pulled out of a Grand Tour — the three-week races that are cycling's biggest prizes (BBC Sport).
The crash came with roughly 33 kilometres remaining on stage eight. Pogacar hit the ground hard enough to damage his left shoulder and open a cut on the left side of his face. He climbed off his bike shortly afterwards.
Until that moment, Pogacar had been dominating this Vuelta. He won stage one from Monaco, then added back-to-back stage victories on stage five (Falset to Roquetes) and stage six (Alcossebre to Castelló), pulling on the race leader's red jersey after each of those wins. He started stage eight sitting three minutes and 50 seconds clear of Spain's Enric Mas in the general classification — the overall standings that decide who wins the race (BBC Sport).
Pogacar had spoken openly about what the Vuelta meant to him. Just over a week before the race, he told Reuters that completing a Grand Tour hat-trick — winning all three of the sport's major three-week races — was a "big dream" of his (Reuters). That dream ended on a Spanish roadside.
With Pogacar out, the race lead passed to Mas, who now tops the general classification. He holds a lead of one minute and 11 seconds over Felix Gall of Austria (BBC Sport).
Stage eight itself was won by France's Bryan Coquard, a sprinter who claimed his first ever Grand Tour stage victory — a landmark result for a rider who has chased one for years.
For Pogacar, the stats tell the story of a rider who looked untouchable until the moment he was not. Three stage wins, a near-four-minute GC cushion, and a Grand Tour hat-trick within reach — all of it gone in a single crash. The Vuelta rolls on, but it rolls on without him.
