New Girl Creator Liz Meriwether Says There Are No Reunion Scripts — Despite Max Greenfield's Claims

Liz Meriwether, the creator of New Girl, says there are no scripts for a reunion of the beloved sitcom — directly contradicting her own star, Max Greenfield, who told a morning show that a reunion was happening and that he had read "amazing" scripts. Speaking at a Season 1 finale screening of her series Furious at the Directors Guild of America in West Hollywood, Meriwether was firm: no New Girl reunion is in the works (Variety).
The saga began in late July, when Greenfield appeared on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle and said a reunion was happening. He doubled down on August 1, 2026, posting a video to his official Instagram account in which he said, "As far as I know, it's happening" (Instagram). Meriwether responded the same day with a tongue-in-cheek Instagram video of her own, joking that the scripts were good "until everyone started giving me notes" (The Hollywood Reporter). She quipped that Greenfield "has just been very adamantly asking to be the New Girl" (Today).
Greenfield has since clarified his remarks exclusively with Variety, joking that he was confused because a reunion of sorts really is happening — just not the scripted kind fans were imagining (Variety).
He is right about that much. On October 10, the New Girl cast — Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, Damon Wayans Jr., and Greenfield — will reunite at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles to receive the Rising Phoenix Award. Greenfield is set to host the event. It is a public cast gathering, not a television revival (Variety).
New Girl ran for seven seasons on Fox from 2011 to 2018, following a group of roommates in a Los Angeles loft. It became a streaming favourite after its original broadcast run ended (Variety).
For fans holding out hope, Meriwether's next project is not a sitcom revival. She is adapting Britney Spears's bestselling memoir The Woman in Me into a feature film, with Jon M. Chu attached to direct and Marc Platt producing. Meriwether said at the Furious screening that she has yet to meet Spears but would love to (Variety).
For New Girl viewers, the takeaway is straightforward: no scripts, no revival, no new episodes. But a cast reunion on a red carpet in October is real — and for now, that is the only kind happening.
