Newcastle Storm Tottenham's Home Opener as Elanga and Wissa Strike in Second Half
Newcastle United spoiled Tottenham's first home match of the Premier League season, winning 2-0 in north London on 29 August 2026.
Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored the goals in the second half to settle it for Matthias Jaissle's side, who backed up a 2-2 draw with Liverpool the previous weekend. Elanga's strike was his second in two matches — a left-footed finish curled inside the far post, set up by Amar Dedic heading down a long pass from Nico González into the Sweden international's path The Guardian.
González, signed for £50m from Manchester City, was making his Newcastle debut. Dedic started at right-back. Lukáš Horníček, handed the gloves again after the Liverpool draw, kept the hosts at bay with saves from Mathys Tel and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Wissa then doubled the lead, assisted by Nick Woltemade, to give Newcastle a cushion they never looked like surrendering Bleacher Report. The forward, named player of the match by Yahoo Sports, was one of five starters retained from the Liverpool game alongside Horníček, Lewis Miley, Elanga and Harvey Barnes Newcastle United.
For Tottenham, the night was defined by new faces and loud statements. Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham used a two-page letter in the match programme to address the club's heavy spending after eight summer signings were unveiled before kick-off. Sandro Tonali, a £116m purchase, started in midfield and was booed on every touch by the travelling Newcastle support. Omar Marmoush, a £60m arrival, was thrust into the starting line-up barely 24 hours after completing his move.
Roberto De Zerbi, the Spurs manager, could not find a way through. His side pressed and probed, but Horníček stood firm and the breakthrough never came.
What makes this result sting for Tottenham is the gap between ambition and outcome. Eight signings, a chief executive writing open letters about investment, a £116m midfielder in the team — and a blank scoreboard on home turf. Newcastle, by contrast, arrived with their own expensive new recruits and made them count immediately. González's long ball led directly to Elanga's opener, and Wissa put the game beyond reach.
For Elanga, the opening weeks of the season are shaping into a purple patch. He scored against Liverpool, found the net in a midweek Carabao Cup win over West Bromwich Albion, and now has two in two in the league. The 24-year-old's combination of pace and composure in front of goal is giving Jaissle a reliable outlet on the break.
Newcastle fans will head back to Tyneside with the feeling that their side's summer business is already paying dividends. Tottenham's will be left hoping that theirs just needs more time.
