Riverland PE Teacher Wins AFL Fantasy by Three Points After 13-Year Pursuit
A 28-year-old PE teacher from South Australia's Riverland has beaten roughly 140,000 competitors to win the 2026 AFL Fantasy Classic — by three points.
Tyler Wagner, who has played the game since 2014, took out the competition with his team "Wagmantle" after 13 years of trying. The margin was razor-thin: three points separating him from the runner-up in a field of about 140,000 Australians who compete each year, with only one champion crowned (ABC News).
AFL Fantasy works like this: players pick a squad of real AFL footballers, each priced within a salary cap, and earn points based on how those players perform in actual matches — kicks, marks, tackles, goals. The better your players do on the weekend, the better your fantasy team does. Wagner's side was built around his favourite player, Fremantle ruckman Luke Jackson, who was a key piece of the winning lineup (ABC News).
The prize is serious. The 2026 AFL Fantasy Classic major prize included a Toyota Tundra Platinum valued at up to $182,000 driveaway and an AFL Grand Final package for two worth $5,500 (AFL Fantasy Prizes). ABC News also reported the prize as $20,000, two Grand Final tickets, and a car (ABC News).
Wagner is a Fremantle Dockers supporter, which adds a layer to the story. Fremantle finished the 2026 season as minor premiers — the team that sits first on the ladder after the home-and-away rounds. The club has never won a premiership in its 32-year history, having made the Grand Final just once, in 2013 (ABC News).
So while Wagner waits to see whether the Dockers can convert a strong season into the club's first flag, he has already claimed a premiership of his own — assembled from the same players he watches every weekend.
