Hovland holds a one-shot lead into Tour Championship Sunday with Gerard, Scheffler and McIlroy all in range

Viktor Hovland will sleep on a one-stroke lead at the Tour Championship after a five-under 65 in round three put him at 15 under par in Atlanta, with the $40m season finale and the FedEx Cup on the line (BBC Sport).

One shot back is Ryan Gerard, who carded a 66 to reach 14 under. The 26-year-old shared the 36-hole lead with Hovland on Friday and has not blinked since (BBC Sport; Yahoo Sports).

Three strokes off the pace, Scottie Scheffler lurks. The world number one pieced together a bogey-free 66 — no dropped shots all day — to sit on 12 under, tied with Adam Scott, who also signed for a 66, and Ludvig Aberg, whose 65 matched Hovland's round (BBC Sport).

Then there is Rory McIlroy. Five shots back on 10 under, the Northern Irishman fired a 63 that included nine birdies, three of them in a row on holes 15, 16 and 17. A record three-time FedEx Cup champion — he won in 2016, 2019 and 2022 — McIlroy has done this before. Cameron Young joins him on 10 under.

The Tour Championship is the PGA Tour's season-ending event, held at East Lake Golf Club from 27 to 30 August. The 29-player field — reduced from 30 when JJ Spaun withdrew injured during round one — is effectively playing for two trophies at once: the tournament title and the FedEx Cup, awarded to the season's top points earner.

For Hovland, Sunday offers a chance to repeat history. He won the FedEx Cup in 2023, lifting the Tour Championship trophy with a 27-under-par total. He arrived at East Lake this week with one PGA Tour win and three top-10 finishes in the 2026 season, and found his putting stroke early — a 28-foot birdie on the seventh hole of round one set the tone (Golfweek).

Scheffler is the defending FedEx Cup champion, having claimed the title in 2024. Tommy Fleetwood, who won last year's Tour Championship, is well off the pace on seven under after a 67, alongside Alex Fitzpatrick.

Further down the board, Robert MacIntyre shot a 63 to climb to four under par, tied for 25th. Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick sit on eight under.

For fans, what this sets up is a Sunday with a narrow lead, a packed chasing group, and a handful of players who have lifted this trophy before. A one-shot lead feels comfortable until you remember that three players within three strokes have won FedEx Cups in the past three years. One bad swing changes everything.
