Barcelona close in on £8.6m deal for Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus
Barcelona are closing in on a deal to sign Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus for £8.6m (10 million euros), with the transfer expected to be completed before Tuesday's deadline. BBC Sport
The deal is at an advanced stage. Jesus is expected to travel for a medical with the Spanish champions on Monday, ahead of the transfer window shutting the following day. Napoli had shown interest in the Brazilian, but he is set to join Barcelona instead.
It is a striking fee for a player Arsenal paid £45m to sign from Manchester City four years ago, in the summer of 2022. Jesus arrived at the Emirates as a statement signing — the kind of acquisition Arsenal hoped would replace the goals lost when Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang departed. He put pen to paper on a contract running until 2027.
For Barcelona, this is a deal a decade in the making. Back in 2016, Jesus — then a 19-year-old idol at Brazilian club Palmeiras — openly called a move to the Camp Nou "a dream" and hoped it would be confirmed within days. Now, at 28, Jesus finally appears bound for the club he has wanted to join since he was a teenager — for less than a quarter of what Arsenal paid City in 2022, and a fraction of the fees Barcelona were weighing up across the years.
What makes this stand out is the patience on Barcelona's side. A player they passed on at 19, priced out of at 23, and could not land at 27 may finally arrive at 28, at the kind of cut-price figure the Catalan club's current finances demand. Whether Jesus rediscovers the sharpness that once made him one of Brazil's most coveted young forwards is the question Barcelona are spending £8.6m to answer.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are left to reconcile a significant financial loss on a player who arrived with genuine expectations. The summer window closes Tuesday. By then, Jesus's long, winding road to Catalonia may finally reach its end.
