Melinda French Gates doubled Olivia Rodrigo's $10 million donation to the beneficiary organisations of the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival, bringing the total to $20 million, during a surprise on-stage appearance before Rodrigo's headlining set in Irvine, California, on 30 August 2026.

French Gates walked out at the start of Rodrigo's set to announce the additional $10 million, pledged through Pivotal Ventures, the organisation she founded to accelerate social progress for women and young people. Rodrigo had revealed the doubled contribution moments earlier, telling the crowd that French Gates had matched her personal donation before she took the stage. (AP News)

Rodrigo first announced her own $10 million gift on Instagram ahead of the festival. All net proceeds from Daisy Chain Fields — ticket sales, artist fees that performers waived, sponsor money and outside donations — are going to ten nonprofit organisations supporting women and girls. The beneficiaries span reproductive rights, health care access, legal advocacy and economic support. They include the Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood, the National Institute for Reproductive Health, Jhpiego, and the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, all of which work on reproductive rights or health care access. Baby2Baby, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance and the National Women's Law Center round out the list, along with FreeFrom, which supports survivors of gender-based violence, and the National Domestic Workers Alliance, which advocates for domestic workers. Rodrigo partnered directly with those last two organisations. (Rolling Stone)

"Olivia Rodrigo is a force," French Gates said in a statement. "What Daisy Chain Fields sets in motion will last far beyond a single night, by opening up opportunity for women and girls around the world and showing a new generation how much their voices matter." (Rolling Stone)

Rodrigo, in her own statement, described Daisy Chain Fields as a demonstration of what happens when people pool their collective power to support one another, and said she was grateful to French Gates and Pivotal for believing in the mission. (Rolling Stone)

The festival continues a pattern of charitable giving from Rodrigo's recent touring. More than $2 million from the net proceeds of her GUTS tour ticket sales went to charities around the world, according to a post by French Gates. (Facebook/Melinda French Gates)

For a first-edition festival, Daisy Chain Fields arrived with a clear proposition: every dollar it generated, from every revenue stream the event touched, was spoken for before the opening note. French Gates's match turned a significant personal pledge into a $20 million pool across ten organisations, and the on-stage announcement put the mechanism in front of a festival crowd rather than a press release.
