Calvert-Lewin rescues a point for Leeds as Schade strikes first for Brentford

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's first goal for Leeds United earned a 1-1 draw with Brentford at Elland Road on Sunday, sparing Daniel Farke's side a home defeat on the second weekend of the new Premier League season.

Kevin Schade had given the visitors a second-half lead, flicking home a Keane Lewis-Potter cross. With eleven minutes remaining, Calvert-Lewin turned in a Lukas Nmecha delivery to level the match. The goal was the striker's first at Elland Road since arriving at the club, and it arrived at the moment Leeds needed it most.

Both sides came into the match off the back of opening-weekend wins. Leeds had beaten Nottingham Forest on the road, while Brentford saw off Tottenham. A point each at Elland Road keeps both unbeaten through two rounds of the 2026/27 campaign.

Farke had set Leeds up with a back five — three centre-backs across the defensive line — but changed to a back four at half-time, matching Brentford's shape to give his team more presence further up the pitch. The tactical switch, a common in-game adjustment when a manager feels his team is being overrun in midfield, gave Leeds a foothold they had lacked before the break.

The last time these two met at Elland Road, in March, they could not find a goal between them — a 0-0 draw that left Leeds frustrated in attack. This time there were two, and a debut goal for the home side's new striker to send the crowd home with something to cheer.

For Leeds fans, the Calvert-Lewin equaliser already looks like money well spent. A striker who has spent his career battling for balls in the penalty area, he needed only one chance to show why the club brought him in. For Brentford, there will be frustration at letting a lead slip on the road, but Schade's sharp finish — a near-post flick from a moving cross, the kind that asks a forward to read the delivery in a split second — was a reminder of the threat Thomas Frank's side carry going forward.

A draw leaves both clubs with four points from two matches. Neither will be entirely satisfied, but neither will be panicking either. The season is two games old. The table will take care of itself later.
