Spanish startup Liux is building a microcar called the Liux Big, wagering that material sustainability and home solar charging can give it an edge against low-cost Chinese competitors in Europe's small-car segment (TechCrunch). The car's body is made from a linen-based biocomposite — a material that blends plant fibers with a binding resin — designed so the fibers can be extracted and recycled at end of life. The batteries are not made in Europe, but the car can recharge at home, including from rooftop solar panels.

The name "Big" is tongue-in-cheek: the car is small enough to park perpendicular to the curb. Liux opened Spain's first new car plant in more than 30 years to manufacture it (TechCrunch; Eurofound).

Co-founders Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros (CEO) and David Sancho bring complementary backgrounds. Espinosa de los Monteros previously co-founded Auara, a Spanish B Corp that sold natural mineral water in bottles made from recycled and recyclable plastic, later acquired by Hijos de Rivera (TechCrunch; Hijos de Rivera). Sancho engineered the Bóreas, a hybrid supercar unveiled at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2017 (TechCrunch; Car Magazine).

The Big is a pivot from Liux's first prototype, the Animal — a fully electric five-seater SUV built almost entirely from recycled or plant-based materials, unveiled in 2022 (TechCrunch; El Confidencial). After showing the Animal, the co-founders shifted direction toward the microcar format.

Espinosa de los Monteros is frank about the limits of building a fully European car. He told TechCrunch that "the idea of a European car does not exist" and that a completely self-sufficient supply chain is out of reach. The batteries, for example, are sourced from outside Europe.

The broader context here is a European microcar segment under pressure from inexpensive Chinese entrants. Liux's strategy is to compete on sustainability rather than on price or performance. The linen-based biocomposite body is the most distinctive part of that pitch: unlike conventional composite or injection-molded plastic panels, it offers a realistic recycling path when the vehicle reaches the end of its life. In a vehicle category where profit margins are thin and production numbers are modest, designing for material circularity is a differentiator that does not require competing on battery cell chemistry or manufacturing scale.

The pivot from the Animal to the Big is a pragmatic one. A five-seater electric SUV from a startup with little supply chain leverage is a tough proposition in a market dominated by established automakers and well-funded Chinese rivals. A microcar narrows the use case, but it also narrows the engineering, regulatory approval, and capital requirements.

In my view, the combination of Sancho's hybrid supercar engineering experience and Espinosa de los Monteros's B Corp background puts Liux in a position to pursue a sustainability-first strategy that is grounded in something manufacturable rather than a concept vehicle. The opening of Spain's first new car plant in over three decades signals an intent to build at scale, not merely to prototype.

The home solar charging capability and the biocomposite body are the two features that tie Liux's product to its sustainability claim. Whether the European microcar market will reward that approach over cheaper Chinese alternatives is the question the Big is designed to answer.
