Valencia in talks with Liverpool to loan Harvey Elliott as La Liga deadline looms
Valencia are in talks with Liverpool to take midfielder Harvey Elliott on loan for the rest of the season, with La Liga's transfer window closing on Tuesday at 23:00 BST (BBC Sport).
Elliott, 23, has agreed personal terms with the Spanish club, according to reports from late last week (CaughtOffside, Yahoo Sports). Napoli and Lazio were also credited with interest before the deadline (This Is Anfield, but Valencia appear to have won the race for the attacking midfielder, a player who likes to operate in the pockets of space between the opposition's midfield and defence.
The deal is not done yet. Valencia, who finished ninth in La Liga last season and missed out on European qualification, have been working to find a financially viable way to make the loan work. They want Liverpool to cover half of Elliott's wages as part of the arrangement (BBC Sport) — a common feature of loan deals, where the parent club effectively subsidises the player's salary to get him minutes elsewhere.
Valencia turned to Elliott after their attempt to re-sign winger Ramazani — a former loanee they hoped to bring back — became complicated (SuperDeporte). With the window closing, they needed a fallback, and Elliott's availability made him an attractive option.
For Liverpool's part, the signals have been there for a while. Elliott featured regularly during pre-season under new head coach Andoni Iraola but has since been left out of Liverpool's first two Premier League squads (BBC Sport). That omission speaks louder than any press conference. When a player who travelled and trained throughout the summer suddenly vanishes from the matchday list, the manager has made his decision.
Elliott's last loan spell, at Aston Villa during the 2025-26 season, yielded only one Premier League start (BBC Sport). A move to Valencia, where the spotlight is fierce but the squad is less crowded, could offer the regular football he needs at an age where potential needs to become production. For Valencia fans, the appeal is straightforward: a creative English midfielder with something to prove, arriving on a loan with no permanent commitment required. For Liverpool, it clears a path for the players Iraola clearly favours while keeping Elliott's development alive.
