Sony's latest State of Play showcase aired on September 3, 2026, and the live chat had other priorities. From start to finish, the YouTube broadcast was flooded with two messages: "NO DISC NO BUY" and "WE WANT DESTINY 3." The Twitch stream got the same treatment, with Destiny emotes and calls for physical game support filling the chat throughout. Eurogamer

The showcase itself was no small affair. Sony announced it on August 31 via the PlayStation Blog, scheduling two back-to-back broadcasts airing at 6am PT / 9am ET, with a fresh deep dive into Final Fantasy VII Revelation promised. PlayStation Blog Kotaku But the audience that showed up was less interested in new trailers than in two controversies that have been simmering for months.

The first is Sony's plan to stop producing physical game discs. Starting in January 2028, only digital codes will be available for games on PlayStation. Sony has pledged to stay the course despite sustained anger from players — outcry that has persisted on social media since the disc announcement was made. Eurogamer Eurogamer

That anger has a legal dimension. In an ongoing class action lawsuit, Sony argued that "reasonable consumers" know they do not actually own the digital games they buy — they are purchasing licences, not copies. For players who already feel that a discless future strips them of ownership, that argument has landed badly. Eurogamer

The second flashpoint is Bungie. Sony's subsidiary has ended major support for Destiny 2 — a live-service game, sold and updated in seasons after launch — alongside significant staffing cuts. The layoffs hit a studio already stretched thin, with Bungie simultaneously committed to Marathon, its newer title, despite that game's well-documented struggles. Eurogamer Eurogamer Eurogamer

Destiny 2 players responded to the reduced support and layoffs with a surge of activity, giving the game a notable player boost even as its live-service future narrows. Eurogamer Fans are now pushing hard for a Destiny 3, though by all accounts the prospect of it being greenlit appears unlikely. Eurogamer

Data suggests the vast majority of game purchases are already made digitally rather than physically, which is the commercial logic behind Sony's decision. Eurogamer The gap between that market reality and what a vocal segment of players want was on full display in the State of Play chat — two hours of trailers competing with a protest that never let up.
