The standout spec is unlock method count: the Combo supports up to 19 distinct ways to open the door. That includes fingerprint scans, passcodes, NFC card access, facial recognition, palm vein recognition, and remote, voice, smartwatch, and widget access through the SwitchBot App. For a retrofit product — one that attaches to your existing lock rather than replacing it — that breadth is the core selling point. You get maximum flexibility in how you (and your family, guests, or delivery drivers) get through the door without swapping out the lock mechanism itself.
SwitchBot says the Lock Ultra Max supports 99 percent of European locks, covering common EU profile cylinders, knob cylinders, Swiss round cylinders, and UK oval cylinders, with additional adapters for less common installations. A cylinder is the part of a lock where you insert the key; different European countries use different shapes and sizes, which has historically been a headache for retrofit smart locks that only fit one or two profiles. The design carries over from the earlier Lock Ultra Vision Combo, which used a magnetic quick-release mechanism and a seamless base ring for gap-free installation with no drilling required. The presence of both products on the IFA floor signals the company's continued push beyond its original bot button-pressing origins into a broader smart home hardware lineup.
In practical terms, the Combo's value proposition is consolidation. A buyer gets a motorized retrofit lock, a biometric keypad with facial recognition, and a Matter hub in one box at a price that undercuts buying each component separately. The trade-off is complexity: 19 unlock methods is a feature checklist, not a user experience, and the real-world question is whether the SwitchBot App can present that flexibility without overwhelming the person standing at their front door with a bag of groceries. The cylinder compatibility claim, if it holds across the advertised profiles, addresses the retrofit category's most persistent failure mode. The motor force and speed improvements address the second most common one. Whether the package coheres into something a non-enthusiast would install and configure without frustration is something the spec sheet cannot answer.
