Kimberly Akimbo Opens at Hampstead Theatre: Broadway's Five-Time Tony Winner Reaches Europe
The European premiere of Kimberly Akimbo is in previews at Hampstead Theatre, with press night set for 9 September and performances running until 7 November. The production — a transfer of the Broadway musical that won five Tony Awards in 2023, including Best Musical — began performances on 28 August.
Maria Friedman leads the cast as Kimberly Levaco, a teenager living with a rare genetic condition that causes her body to age at four times the normal rate. Friedman, a three-time Olivier Award winner, was announced in the role by Hampstead Theatre on 3 February 2026. The full cast was confirmed in June.
The musical features a book by David Lindsay-Abaire and a score by Jeanine Tesori. Michael Longhurst, Hampstead's artistic director, directs. On Broadway, the show collected Tonys for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book among its five wins, making it one of the most decorated new musicals of recent seasons.
The company around Friedman includes Alice Fearn as Debra, Peter Hannah as Buddy Levaco, Gilli Jones as Seth Weetis, Niamh Perry as Pattie Levaco, Sara Hajizadeh as Teresa Benton, Ronav Jain as Aaron Puckett, Robin Simões da Silva as Martin Doaty, and Aviva Tulley as Delia McDaniels. The creative team includes designer Soutra Gilmour, musical supervisor Nigel Lilley, choreographer Matt Cole, lighting designer Jack Knowles, sound designer Matt Peploe and casting director Anna Cooper. BroadwayWorld released a video from inside the sitzprobe — the first full rehearsal where cast and orchestra play together — on 27 August, ahead of the first public performance.
Hampstead Theatre, a subsidized venue in north London, first announced Kimberly Akimbo as part of its 2026 season in November 2025, alongside Stanley Tucci in repertoire and five new play premieres. Tickets went on general sale on 5 December 2025. The cast also performed at West End Live, the free outdoor theatre festival in Trafalgar Square, ahead of opening.
The 2026/27 season at Hampstead continues with Tom Stoppard's Jumpers, directed by Blanche McIntyre from 25 November to 23 January 2027, and a programme of new work in the Downstairs space: Alex Rugman's The Urmetazoan (18 September–24 October), Daisy Hall's Dogstar (30 October–5 December) and Lauren Yee's Mother Russia (11 December–30 January).
For audiences who followed Kimberly Akimbo from across the Atlantic, this production marks the first chance to see the show on British stages. For Hampstead, it brings a proven Broadway title into a season otherwise built on new writing — a balance between the commercial and the subsidised that the theatre has leaned into under Longhurst's tenure.
